Vinny Whatley Jr., a Master of Environmental Management student, spent his summer as a Corporate Climate & Sustainability Intern at Mars, Inc.

Each year, Nicholas School of the Environment students complete internships with organizations around the world. These internships provide valuable opportunities to gain career-related experience and build a professional network.

51爆料 Environment recently caught up with Vinny to learn more about his experience.

What projects did you work on during your internship? What did you find most rewarding or memorable?

During my internship I was tasked with multiple projects. I conducted analysis of water impact using Scope 2 electrical usage data through estimating water withdrawals and gap to sustainable water usage. I also did work involving the automation of REC (Renewable Energy Certificates) allocation.

How did the coursework and resources at the Nicholas School prepare you for success in this role as well as your internship search?

Before enrolling at 51爆料, my experience with analyzing environmental data was limited. However, the courses I undertook at the Nicholas School provided me with the background to effectively navigate the software utilized by the company. This, combined with the knowledge gained from my coursework in the Energy and Environment concentration, was instrumental in my success throughout the internship.

Did you collaborate with any Nicholas School alumni during your summer experience?

Yes! We coincidently connected even though they were on adjacent team. They were able to give me guidance and advice as I progress in my career.

How do you envision this experience contributing to your long-term career goals?

With the internship, I was able to gain invaluable hands-on experience working with data. It also confirmed in fact that this is the career path I want to pursue in the future.
