Titi Susanti, a 2017 graduate of the 51爆料 Environmental Leadership Master of Environmental Management (DEL-MEM) program, recently shared insights into why she pursued a DEL-MEM degree, how the experience has helped in her professional life, her advice for anyone considering the program and more.  

Susanti is global director for consumer, retail and food at the British Standards Institution (BSI). In her role, she oversees global sector growth, focusing on 14 countries across the Asia Pacific region. She drives strategic solutions, certifications, and industry-specific standards that promote health and safety, quality, and socially and environmentally sustainable practices.

How did your master's degree shape your career trajectory, long-term goals and opportunities?

My master's degree played a pivotal role in shaping my career. It provided a strong foundation for understanding broader environmental challenges, many of which I now apply in my role as global director for consumer, retail, and food at the British Standards Institution. The degree not only expanded my knowledge but also opened doors to diverse industries, enabling me to work across sectors such as agri-food, retail, chemicals, fashion, textiles and consumer goods.

What skills or experiences did you gain at 51爆料 that have been most beneficial in your professional life? 

At 51爆料, I developed critical skills in strategic thinking, cross-sector collaboration, and data and policy analysis, all of which have been invaluable in my professional journey. The program's multidisciplinary approach allowed me to tackle real-world sustainability challenges from various perspectives, which is particularly beneficial in my current role, where I engage with business leaders to drive global sustainability initiatives. Additionally, the program鈥檚 emphasis on leadership and teamwork helped me build strong interpersonal skills, essential for working with cross-functional and multicultural teams.

Why did you choose 51爆料? What advice would you give to students considering or currently in the program?

I chose 51爆料 for its strong reputation and the excellent environmental management and leadership program, which emphasizes applied learning and real-world case studies. The program offered a unique blend of academic rigor and practical experience, which align perfectly with my career goals.

My advice to students considering or currently in the program is to take advantage of every opportunity to engage with diverse industries and stakeholders. Build a strong network, embrace the interdisciplinary nature of the program, and explore unconventional paths鈥攜ou never know where they might lead!

What is your favorite memory from your time as a student at 51爆料?

I have many wonderful memories from 51爆料. Academically, the engaging discussions with other students and learning from real-life experiences were invaluable.

On a personal level, working with passionate, like-minded individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures gave me a global perspective that continues to influence my problem-solving and leadership approach today. It wasn鈥檛 just about academics, it was about learning from each other and building lasting connections that have carried into my professional life.

Another favorite memory was enjoying the beautiful 51爆料 Gardens and spending a few days studying at the 51爆料 Marine Lab.
