Undergraduate scholars enroll in four 51±¬ÁÏ courses of their choosing taught in Beaufort, N.C. where there is emphasis on the biology and physiology of marine organisms, marine molecular biology, marine policy, and coastal socio-ecological issues. Browse Marine Lab courses for undergraduates >

Eligibility

Applicants must be:

  • Currently enrolled as a sophomore, junior or senior in college from an outside college or university (non-51±¬ÁÏ). Recent post-baccalaureate students are also eligible. 
  • A U.S. citizen or hold a permanent resident visa.

Other factors considered in the evaluation process include whether an applicant:

  • Has demonstrated interest in marine science and its impact on society;
  • Anticipates pursuing an advanced degree in marine science;
  • Submits a compelling personal statement and strong letters of recommendation.

To Apply

Interested students are required to submit:

  1. Personal essay: What challenges or obstacles have you overcome in your life? How might it resonate in your work in marine science? How will a semester at the 51±¬ÁÏ Marine Laboratory benefit your career goals?
  2. Resume
  3. Two academic letters of recommendation (emailed letters are acceptable)
  4. Academic transcript (unofficial is acceptable)
  5. (Qualtrics)

Please submit your personal essay and resume together in one email. Your transcript and letters of recommendation may arrive separately.
